We use a range of accommodation types on our Young Spirit residential programmes. Depending on the programme and location you may find yourself in a teepee tent, sleeping hut, log cabin or a bunkhouse.
We use a range of accommodation types depending on the programme and location. For some programmes, such as the Forest Expedition, we will use Teepee Tents. For our programmes on Dartmoor we will often make use of our bunkhouses.
Teepee tents will probably need little introduction. These tents offer versatile accommodation under sturdy canvas.
Our tents are supplemented by our very own unique Field Kitchen – our purpose- built cooking and washing up facility on it’s own trailer.
Teepee tents are extremely versatile and are often used on our Forest, Canal & High Dartmoor Expeditions.
The Raleigh Estate
Balcombe camp is our own woodland camp on the Raleigh Estate near Dartmouth. We have exclusive use of the camp which consists of:
- A main lodge that can seat 30 with wood burning stove and kitchen.
- 3 main sleeping huts – large sturdy canvas topped cabins.
- Two log cabins for school staff with 3 bunks each.
- 2 substantial toilet cabins with efficient composting loos.
- Outside seating and group area and plenty of room to roam.
The camp is set in a large private forest. It offers a wilderness like environment yet with amenities to make your stay more comfortable and good access to roads and services.
If you are unfamiliar with the bunkhouse concept, traditionally they have always been popular in mountain environments with climbers and walkers as a (slightly) upmarket version of camping. They were often just a basic roof with simple bunks for passing travellers providing little more than shelter for the night.
These days they often more than that: Spirit of Adventure operates two self- catering bunkhouses, both ideal for groups and in perfect positions to use a base for our residential visits exploring Dartmoor. Both bunkhouses are warm and cosy, have comfortable lounges with a wood burner, fully equipped kitchens, excellent showers and drying room.
Powdermills Bunkhouse is a converted granite barn, high up in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. It sleeps 26 in 4 rooms – two 4- berth, one 8- berth and one 10- berth.
This is an ideal bunkhouse for exploring the more remote Dartmoor environment. Powdermills is not currently used as a venue for standard programmes, but does offer extra accommodation for groups at Dewerstone Cottage, being only 20mins away.
Powdermills is comfortable and warm with excellent facilities. It’s carpeted throughout with storage heaters in every room.
There is a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable lounge with wood burning stove, tables, chairs and sofas.
A very efficient drying room with dehumidifier is great for dealing with soggy clothes!
Dewerstone Cottage, is in the Meavy Valley within the National Trust’s Dewerstone Estate.
We took on the cottage and renovated it in mid- 2014. The idyllic setting close to rocky outcrops within ancient woodland, offers us wide open areas to explore and play.
The accommodation sleeps 34 in 6 rooms – two 10- berth, one 6- berth, one 4- berth and two 2- berth. It’s comfortable and warm with heaters in every room.
